Could taking four minutes to consume one Hersheyās Kiss š« really help calm the pressure-filled day?
It could indeed!
Presence is meditation in motion. It is the practice of bringing mindfulness into the activities of everyday life. We can practice the art of being here & now, while waiting in a long grocery store line, changing a babyās diaper, or sitting in traffic.
Life moves pretty fast, If you donāt stop and look around for a while, you might miss it. Life unfolds in the present. But so often, we let the present slip away, allowing time to rush past unobserved and unseized, and squandering the precious seconds of our lives as we worry about the future and ruminate about what's past.
We don't appreciate the living present because our š "monkey minds," as Buddhists call them, vault from thought to thought like monkeys swinging from tree to tree.
We need to live more in the moment. Living in the momentāalso called mindfulnessāis a state of active, open, intentional attention on the present.
Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment, through a gentle, nurturing lens.
Mindfulness also involves acceptance, meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings without judging themāwithout believing, for instance, that thereās a ārightā or āwrongā way to think or feel in a given moment.
If you really want to live a longer life, 'Presence'ānot drugs, healthy eating, or any other strategyāis the best solution. You may not actually live longer in terms of calendar time, but your experience of life and your perception of time will expand. The days, months, and years can be richer, more meaningful, and more fully lived.
Appreciating the fall leavesš, listening to the chirping birdsšļø, smelling the scents of flowers š· or fresh-cut grassš, feeling the warmth of the summer sun š¤ļø, savoring a meal āāthese simple acts of presence slow life down. They help us go through each day feeling more alive, awake, and content.
Mindfulness takes practice and effort. No one is good at it when they first start. Your mind is likely to wander repeatedly.
But, with practice and patience, you'll get better. And eventually, you'll recognize that you're living a more mindful life and you'll be free to enjoy benefits, like decreased stress, better mental health, better relationships, and greater overall happiness.
